EZ growth caught up in several problems

Vietnam has several advantages to develop its economic zones but they have lost their competitiveness and failed to attract many foreign investors, a seminar in Ho Chi Minh City heard Tuesday.

Policy inadequacies as well as inappropriate and dispersed locations of the economic zones were the causes for their poor performance, said Dr. Vo Dai Luoc, former member of the Prime Minister’s Research and Advisory Board.

According to Luoc, the government has planned 15 coastal economic zones and decided to build 13. Some, like the Chu Lai Economic Zone, have operated inefficiently with even initial targets unattained.

“Many economic zones have been approved by the government but they only exist on paper,” Luoc added.
