Japan assists agriculture in Mekong Delta

The Japanese government will provide US$3.9 million for a project to help farmers in the Mekong Delta region improve the farming system and cultivation techniques.

An agreement to this effect was signed by the Southern Fruit Research Institute (SOFRI) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in the southern province of Tien Giang on July 21.

SOFRI director Nguyen Minh Chau said the project will provide the Mekong Delta provinces of Tien Giang, Vinh Long, Soc Trang, Tra Vinh and Ben Tre with technical assistance and experience in planting citrus fruit trees.

The Mekong Delta currently has more than 73,000 ha of citrus fruit trees, which account for 27.4 percent of its total of 282,000 ha of fruit trees.
