Coal sector targets 43 million tonnes this year
The Vietnam Coal and Mining Industries Group (TKV) has decided to raise its coal output this year to 43 million tonnes from the 40 million-tonne target set previously.
The group says that it will boost production to meet the target, with priority given to key coal consumers such as the electricity, fertilizer, paper and cement industries. It will modernise production chains and facilities, and diversify products for the domestic market and for export in 2009 and the following years.
To this end, the group has asked its subsidiaries to speed up mining, develop new mines, expand existing mines including Vang Danh, Khanh Hoa and Khe Cham, and invest in an underground coal gasification project under the Red River’s sedimentary bed.
In the first six months, the group exploited 20.3 million tonnes of coal, down by 5 percent, and sold 21.5 million tonnes, up 3 percent from the same period last year.
