VNPT, China Telecom, six others to build undersea link

China Telecom Corp., the country’s largest fixed-line operator, and six Asian phone companies signed an agreement to build an Asia-Pacific undersea cable.

The proposed Asia-Pacific Gateway would span 8,000 kilometers and be ready for service in 2011, Chunghwa Telecom Co. and Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp. said in separate statements Monday.

The cost of the cable, to service many markets including China, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam, was not included in the statements.

The other companies that signed the deal are China Unicom Hong Kong Ltd., South Korea’s KT Corp., Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co., Telekom Malaysia Bhd and Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications group, Chunghwa said.
