More Vietnam-US direct shipping services to launch next month

The Tokyo-based global freight and logistics company MOL said it will begin direct Vietnam-US container service from June 4, exiting from Tan Cang-Cai Mep Port in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province.

MOL’s Pacific Southwest Express service will offer the service from Cai Mep to ports in Los Angeles and Oakland in California via Hong Kong and Yantian in China.

The return trip will stop in Tokyo, Xiamen, Dachan Bay and Hong Kong before returning to Cai Mep.

Transit times are about 16 days from Cai Mep to the US West Coast, the company said, adding that approximately 37 percent of MOL’s Asian imports are bound for the US West Coast.

In related news, Korean Hanjin Shipping also announced the launch of its new direct service from Busan in the Republic of Korea to Shanghai in China and Hai Phong City starting June 6.

Hai Phong Express Service will be a weekly service between Busan, Shanghai and Hai Phong with two 600-TEU ships, one operated by Hanjin Shipping and the other by Sinotrans Shipping.

Hanjin Shipping said it was adding the new service to its existing direct service to Ho Chi Minh City in response to the rapid growth of Vietnam’s economy.

Its rival APL last week also announced the launch of a new weekly direct container shipping service between Vietnam and the West Coast of North America on June 4.
