Vietnam initiates 6-solution package to regional crisis

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung expressed his belief that with an effective coordination, Asia would create a collective power to overcome all challenges, after presenting a six-point solution to regional crisis at a conference on Asia’s future in Tokyo, Japan, on May 21.

“The Future of Asia” conference, held annually by the Nikkei newspaper, is one of Asia ’s most prestigious forums and draws the participation of many Asian leaders and economic consortiums across the world.

Dung, taking the floor right after the opening speech by the Nikkei newspaper President, said the global economy in general and the Asian economies in particular were undergoing the most difficult and challenging time since many decades.

“This (the conference) is an opportunity for us to have in-depth and comprehensive discussions on measures and forms of cooperation to respond to the current financial crisis and economic downturn and prepare ourselves for a new development stage of Asia and the world after the crisis,” emphasised the Vietnamese Government leader.

He therefore proposed six measures for stronger regional coordination to address challenges with priority given to the effort to consolidate the confidence and build the platforms for sustainable development.

Other measures include expanding and deepening economic and trade cooperation and increasing trade and investment between Asian economies as well as further promoting development cooperation in less developed regions and sub-regions and narrowing down the development gap in the continent.

He also called for enhancing the role of Asia in establishing the global trade framework, reforming the international financial and monetary system and coordinating actions to overcome crisis. He emphasised that “one community will only be strong if each member is strong.”

Last but not least, he said, Asian countries need to further enhance their creativity, set up a peaceful and stable international environment, and re-establish Asia ’s role as one of the cradles of human civilizations.

“With effective coordination of all regional countries, we ( Asia ) would generate a collective power to overcome challenges and move forward a prosperous future for all Asian countries, and contribute to stability and development of the world,” Dung concluded.

The Conference “Future of Asia” this year is attended by leaders and senior officials from a number of regional countries, including Lao Prime Minister Bousone Buphavane and Prime Minister Han Seung-soo of the Republic of Korea .

As 2009 is the “Year of Exchange between Mekong Delta and Japan ”, cooperation between Asia’s largest economy and the Mekong subregional countries is high on the agenda of the two-day meeting, along with its major goal of stronger regional cooperation.

Minister of Transport Ho Nghia Dung of Vietnam is expected to attend a dialogue on potential of the East Asian industrial corridor and the impact by major transport infrastructural projects scheduled for May 22.--Enditem

The on-going meeting is the 15 th of its kind held annually by Nekkei newspaper with the first taking place in 1995.
