Telecoms summit gets underway in capital

The second Vietnam Telecoms International Summit opened in Hanoi on May 20, attracting the representatives of 150 companies and 30 leading experts, both domestic and foreign.

Opening the summit, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Tran Duc Lai said the Vietnamese Government always places a top priority on developing telecoms to serve the nation’s socio-economic needs.

The government will also try to create a more favourable investment environment for foreign investors, especially leading telecoms and IT groups across the world, he elaborated.

The deputy minister said he hoped that, amid the global economic downturn, this summit would be a good chance for international and domestic telecoms companies to share their experiences and seek out new partners and help to develop Vietnam’s telecoms market, particularly mobile and broadband services.

During the course of the two-day meeting, themed “Building a sustainable mobile and broadband future for Vietnam: 3G and beyond,” the participants will focus the discussions on the country’s IT and communications development targets for the 2011-2020 period.

They will also look into plans to expand broadband and mobile services, as well as effective business models for the next generation of mobile and landline telephone services.

According to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Vietnam has one of the highest telecoms growth rates in the world in recent years.

By the end of the first quarter of 2009, Vietnam had a total of 87 million telephone subscribers, representing a 27-fold increase over 2000.

The country’s ADSL broadband internet market has also seen a sharp growth rate with 2 million subscribers by the end of 2008, 40 times higher than 2001. The number of internet users is around 21 million.
