May holiday ‘bumper crop’ for supermarts

Supermarts reportedly had a ‘bumper crop’ during the May holiday as sales were very good on those days.

HCM City: Supermarts full of buyers

Home appliance centres, mobile phone and computer shops in HCM City all said sales were very good on the holiday, up by 30% at least and 150% at the most.

Lien An Thach, Business Director of Cho Lon Home Appliance distribution chain, said that in the four days of the holiday, the chain received 25,000 visitors and had turnover double the previous week.

Cho Lon supermart proved to be the place which attracted the highest number of visitors and had highest turnover in the chain; it brought 25-30% of the chain’s total turnover. No exact figures have been released by Nguyen Kim and Ideas chains, but reporters found out that a lot of people flocked to the shopping centres.

A lot of people did not travel over the May holiday. They, fearing traffic jams, decided to stay at home, and went shopping at shopping centres.

According to Bui Thi Hanh Thu, Deputy General Director of Coop mart chain, the turnover of the chain on the holiday increased by 30% over the same period of last year. On average, every receipt was VND300-400,000.

While many fashion shops were closed on the holiday, Zen Plaza reportedly had holiday turnover 19.5% higher than on the long weekend last year.

According to Trieu Huong Giang, Deputy General Director of Zen Plaza, the growth rate was always 30% in previous years, higher than the 19.5% growth rate this year. However, Giang believes that this should be seen as a good thing in the current context.

Explaining the sharp increase in sales by supermarts, Thach said that big shopping centres offered discount programmes for the holiday. Vietnamese consumers always find holidays a good time to make purchases, while shopping centres prove to be desirable destinations for those who do not travel.

Hanoi: Promotion programmes lure more customers

In order to stimulate demand on the May holiday, big trade centres and supermarts all offered attractive promotion programmes which successfully lured Hanoians and those who travelled to the capital.

Le Quang Vu, Director of Media Mart, specialising in home appliances, said that on April 30, sales of the mart increased by 500% in comparison with other promotion programmes.

Big C Thang Long has also reported that sales by the supermart increased sharply on the holiday, though no exact figure has been released. According to Nguyen Ngoc Dung, Deputy General Director of Big C Thang Long, the supermart prepared well for a big number of visitors.

Explaining the sharp increase of sales on the vacation days, Dung attributed it to the support programmes initiated by the state, saying that the 50% tax cut on some products has helped push demand up.

Metro, Fivimart, Big C, Hapro, Nguyen Kim, Media Mart, Pico Plaza all offered 10-30% discounts on products. Some products even saw price decreases of 50% with price support from producers.
