Vietnam wins special award at European Seafood Expo
The Vietnamese company Vinh Hoan has won a special award at the prestigious Seafood Prix d'Elite competition of the 2009 European Seafood Exposition held in Brussels, Belgium, from April 28-30.
Its “Seafood Harmony” product surpassed 37 other rivals from countries such as Spain, France, Denmark, the UK and Turkey to secure the award for the Health and Nutrition category.
Vinh Hoan is the first Asian business to have won this major award.
The dish, made from ocean-caught barramundi combined with jumbo black tiger shrimp and sea scallops, was topped with sun-dried tomato, capers and roasted garlic butter sauce, then hand-wrapped in a traditional en papillote wrapper, which was designed to steam the seafood in its own moisture. Not only the judges but also visitors to the expo highly praised the offering.
Vinh Hoan Corporation was one of the 45 Vietnamese seafood enterprises present at the 17th European Seafood Expo, which is seen as the largest trade event of the world seafood industry.
Vietnam has participated in the expo for 11 consecutive years to access markets and seek new partners, said Nguyen Huu Dung, Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).
Despite the pressure from the global economic crisis, there was still an increase in the number of Vietnamese enterprises attending the 2009 expo, Mr Dung said, adding that VASEP’s stand at the fair had drawn thousands of visitors from all over the world.
The European Seafood Expo provides a valuable opportunity for seafood businesses worldwide to meet, exchange information, seek customers and sign new contracts.
As many as 1,600 firms from 75 countries took part in this year’s event, which attracted about 20,000 visitors./.
