City firms shake off first-quarter blues

Signs of an economic recovery are emerging in the second quarter as several enterprises in HCM City say they are looking to employ a large number of workers to meet new export orders.

This is in sharp contrast to the first-quarter trend of thousands of workers being laid off by many firms hurt by the global economic slowdown, the Tuoi Tre (Youth) reports.

Nguyen Duy Thanh, Deputy General Director of the Binh Tien Footwear Company (Biti's) in District 6, said with the fall in export orders from traditional markets, his company intensified promoting its products both in domestic and non-traditional overseas markets. This had helped reduce the impact of the recession, he added.

This year, the company would open a new factory in the Mekong Delta province of Can Tho and recruit some 600 new workers to work there, he said.

Several enterprises manufacturing garment and textiles, sport shoes and suitcases in the city's industrial parks (IP) and export-processing zones (EPZ) recently announced plans to employ more workers.

Two garment companies, Hansoll Vina and Triumph, at the Song Than I IP said they needed 3,000 workers to fulfill their current orders.

Sports shoemakers An Loc and Sung Huyn Vina at the Binh Duong II IP also planned to hire a large number of new workers.

Thousands of new employees are being sought to work at the Linh Trung I and II EPZs by several companies including shoemaker Freetrend and garment and textiles firms Kollan and Nissei.

The situation is similar at the Le Minh Xuan IP and the Tan Thuan EPZ.

According to the HCM City and Thanh Nien employment agencies, more and more enterprises have been announcing recruitment of new workers since the beginning of last month.

The enterprises are working with authorities at provincial, district and commune levels to find workers.

Doan Thi Thu Ha, Head of the Labour Management Department of the HCM City Export Processing and Industrial Zones Authority, confirmed that several companies with export orders in hand were not able to find enough workers for production.

Many enterprises had announced more favourable conditions for workers including increased salaries, better allowances and entertainment activities, Ha said.

The Triumph Company, which makes ladies' underwears, is offering a monthly salary of VND1.9 million during probation, which will go up to VND2.53 million on signing an employment contract.

Meanwhile, some businesses have scaled down job requirements to attract a wider segment of the workforce.

Some of them have expanded the age limit for workers to 40 instead of their earlier practice of employing only young workers between 18 and 25 years of age.

Yet others have lowered their minimum educational and professional qualification requirements in order to attract more workers.
