Seafood industry sees improving horizon
The national seafood industry is doing well, China has increased shrimp imports and Russia has decided to allow the re-import of Tra fish after a three month ban due to poor quality and hygiene.
Despite local seafood shrimp exports to traditional markets dwindling, China is emerging as a large potential importer, the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) recently announced.
Since early this year, shrimp exports to China have estimated to have reached 1,000 tons, worth $12 million, an increase of 110 percent over the same period last year.
China is now Vietnam’s fourth largest shrimp market.
Le Van Quang, deputy chairman of VASEP and general director of Minh Phu Seafood, a leading shrimp exporter, reckoned that Vietnam’s export of shrimp to key markets, except China, will fall sharply in the next few months and forecasts a decline of 30 percent in shrimp export this year over last year.
Three months after Russia issued the ban on Vietnam’s export of Tra fish, a Vietnamese delegation, including seafood exporters, earlier this week flew to Russia to sign seafood contracts with Russian importers.
Deputy Minister of Vietnam Agricultural and Rural Development Luong Le Phuong said that 90 percent of the negotiations have been completed.
The Vietnam Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Development have suggested the Russia Plant and Animal Quarantine Department open an office in Vietnam to check companies’ goods before being exported to Russia.
