Promoting IT applications in e-customs service
The Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and the General Department of Customs signed a cooperative agreement in Hanoi on March 25, with the aim of facilitating e-customs procedures.
The agreement was in the framework of the Government’s project to assist businesses in applying information technology (IT) to the process of international economic integration in the 2005-2010 period.
Under the deal, many cooperation activities will be held in 2009, including seminars, forums and training course in many provinces and cities nationwide to raise local businesses’ awareness of the importance of IT applications in the customs sector. The General Department of Customs will also carry out a pilot project to grant incentives to businesses adopting the new methods in a bid to promote e-customs services.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Head of the General Department of Customs, Le Manh Hung, said that the application of IT and administrative reform will continue to be speeded up in the future in order to modernize the customs sector and create more favourable conditions for import-export activities. However, he said, due attention should be paid to issues relating to security in e-customs clearance.
According to VCCI Chairman, Vu Tien Loc, in the current context of the global economic turndown, this cooperation agreement is important for Vietnamese businesses to boost import-export activities. E-customs services will help them to save time and money, he said, adding that this is an inevitable trend to help local businesses integrate deeper into the global economy.
