Hanoi allocates 150 billion VND for dismissed labourers
Hanoi plans to allocate a sum of 150 billion VND for assistance to the city’s labourers who lost their jobs due to the economic downturn, said the Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee, Dao Van Binh, on March 26.
Binh said part of the money will be channeled to struggling businesses to help them pay owing allowances to labourers who lost their jobs in 2008 or who have to temporarily stop their work this year.
The remainder will be spent on providing vocational training, generating new jobs, granting loans for production, and boosting labour export during this year.
According to the city’s department of labour, war invalids and social affairs, by mid-March, 367 businesses in the city had sacked more than 230,000 labourers as a result of slack production, representing 12.9 percent of the total number of labourers.
In addition, about 120,000 other labourers working for private businesses and in craft villages have been made redundant.
At the same time, 29 labour exporters in the city also reported that 656 guest workers had to return home before their contracts expire.
The capital city estimates that some 340,000 labours would lose their jobs in two years, 2008 and 2009.
