Binh Thuan export top-quality ‘blue dragon’ fruit

The southern province of Binh Thuan plans to grow 3,000ha of thanh long or blue dragon fruits that meet strict quality and hygiene standards for export in 2009.

The districts of Ham Thuan Nam and Ham Thuan Bac alone will farm up to 2,800ha. Participants in the project include households that grow more than 1ha of the fruit, as well as commercial enterprises and cooperatives.

The provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development says that there will be 100 groups who specialize in producing the fruit to VietGAP standards.

The US has recently denied that the country will stop importing Vietnam’s ‘thanh long’.
