Ministries confer on ways to stimulate agriculture
Officials from ministries and the State Bank of Vietnam met March 23 to discuss measures to stimulate agricultural demand, thus giving the economy a boost.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development hopes to mechanize over 80 percent of crop preservation activities by 2020.
An official from the Institute for Policy and Strategy for Agriculture and Rural Development said if demand for rice goes up sharply, it would push up agricultural growth.
Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat said to overcome difficulties in producing and consuming rice, his ministry would ask the Government to amend rice export rules.
It would ask for setting periodic export ceilings while eliminating the quota mechanism, he explained.
The ministry would also ask the Government to subsidize loans to farmers for buying agricultural implements to improve productivity and preservation technologies, he said.
The ministry hopes to mechanize 50 percent of crop preservation activities by 2010, and over 80 percent by 2020.
Mr. Phat added that the ministry would encourage farmers to grow three crops instead of two a year and ask the Government to provide them a subsidy of VND1 million a hectare.
