Vietnam milk inspections yield results
Milk inspections launched nationwide Monday following China’s milk controversy have found over 500kg of dubious milk.
“We have transferred the products of dubious origins for further examination,” said Cao Minh Quang, Deputy Minister of Health.
In Ho Chi Minh City, Department of Health officials have discovered nearly 500 kg of unbranded powdered milk in businesses near the Kim Bien and An Dong markets in District 5.
At the Tan Tai Nguyen shop on Nguyen Tri Phuong Street, officials found cases of milk labeled “Pura” in Chinese. Investigators ordered the owner to provide the name and address of the wholesaler.
Earlier this week, market watchdog officials found 19 bags of powdered milk labeled “Skimmed Milk Power” at a store called Van Minh on 3/2 Street. The packaging did not provide details on the milk’s origins or ingredients.
In Hanoi, inspectors found many shops selling bags of what authorities call “homemade milk.” Shop owners were unable to provide records of their origin.
The Health Ministry Friday had asked health departments nationwide to inspect milk production and trading in all localities to prevent China’s Sanlu milk from slipping into the domestic market.
The move came in the wake of reports that hundreds of babies have developed kidney stones in China after drinking Sanlu-brand milk formula contaminated with melamine, a chemical used in various industrial and agricultural applications.
Melamine is often used as a pesticide.
