Renting materials may aid building contractors
Vietnamese investors could shave 20-30 per cent off their purchase costs by renting their construction equipment , said head of the Viet Nam Association of Construction Contractors Vu Khoa on Thursday.
Khoa was speaking at a seminar with Japan’s Nikken International Asia Co Ltd. The seminar discussed how renting building materials and related equipment could help save contractors time and money, as based on the experiences of contractors in Japan.
A typical construction company needs about 2,000 pieces of support equipment, including system support, scaffolding, steel piping and temporary housing. Khoa said that after the project was completed, all the equipment needed to be maintained, which led to a further drain on finances.
"You can rent just what you need, and just when you need it," said president of the Nikken International Asia Co Ltd Taiichi Sakaguchi.
The Nikken Rentacom Group, the mother company in Japan, said it has US$1.2 billion worth of construction equipment. It spends $90 million annually on maintaining its materials, Taiichi said.
Equipment safety is assured, and deaths caused by construction accidents in Japan have fallen from 2,652 in 1961 to 461 last year.
No deaths have occurred in relation to Nikken Rentacom Group, which has been using safe, standardised equipment for 40 years.
The Dung Quat oil refinery plant in the central province of Quang Ngai was using construction equipment provided by Japan as a replacement for Vietnamese equipment that failed to meet international standards, said vice minister of Construction Cao Lai Quang at the seminar.
Viet Nam was undergoing major construction, Quang said adding that there wasn’t any domestic or foreign company specialising in supplying such equipment.
He expressed hopes that Viet Nam would use safe and convenient construction equipment for all its future projects.
