HCM City taxi operators prepare to slash fares
Several HCM City-based taxi operators are getting ready to lower their fares in anticipation of a Government decision to lower petroleum prices at the pump.
Vinataxi will reduce fares by 5-8 per cent, said deputy general director Nguyen The Vinh.
Ta Long Hi, deputy director of VinaSun Taxi Company, said his company will cut prices from VND11,500 to VND11,000 per km.
However, doing so will affect the drivers’ benefits, so a meeting with company directors and drivers to discuss the cut will be convened.
Mai Linh Taxi Company is decreasing fares by 5-8 per cent, though when the new rate will be applied is not yet definite, said general director Truong Quang Man.
On Thursday, Future Taxi Company cut fares by VND500 per km to VND11,000 per km.
Customers have been complaining about the slow adjustment of taxi fare prices.
When petrol prices went up, fares shot up accordingly. But when petrol prices went down, even for a second time, taxi companies were reluctant to reduce prices, a passenger in District 3 said.
Taxi operators said seven to ten days is needed to adjust the meters.
An insider expects fares will change in ten days.
Several taxi operators, including Vinasun, Future Star, Vinataxi, and Mai Linh, raised their fares by 15-20 per cent, or VND1,500-2,000 per km, after the Government increased petrol prices late last month.
On Wednesday, the Ministry of Finance for the second time in a month cut fuel prices by VND1,000 a litre.
The prices for A92 petrol and kerosene are currently VND17,000 and 18,000 per litre, respectively, compared to VND19,000 and 20,000 per litre late last month.
