Switzerland helps consolidate metrology capacity

A Swiss-funded project was launched early this month to improve the Directorate for Standards and Quality (STAMEQ)’s capacity to comply with WTO regulations on exports.

The US$2.42-million project is aimed at enabling recognized labs in Vietnam to provide international standard testing services, especially for high growth export items like textiles and garments and foodstuff.

The labs will be consolidated in terms of their capacity to certify international standards, including the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), the Food Safety Management System ISO 22000 and the Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems OHSAS 18000.

The project will also help pilot projects establish food origin seeking systems and assist the compilation of technical regulations and standards for a number of production sectors in Vietnam.

The project, which will last till 2011, receives technical assistance from the UN Industrial Development Organization.
