Vietnam to export 3.5 million tons of rice in 9 months

Vietnam expects to export some 3.5 million tons of rice in the first nine months of this year with August shipments estimated to hit 400,000 tons, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said.

Vietnamese five-percent broken rice is priced at US$620-$630 per ton, cheaper by $80-$90 than the same product from Thailand.

Vietnam exported 2.79 million tons of rice totaling $1.81 billion in the first seven months, down 6.8 percent in volume but up 87.6 percent in value over the same period last year, official figures showed.

The Vietnam Food Association has proposed the government allow rice exporters to get bank loans in foreign currencies instead of Vietnamese dong to purchase rice from farmers.

It has also called for rice export duties to be removed or the taxable price threshold to be raised to $800 per ton from the current $600.
