Customers with stable income prefer supermarts
Dr Nguyen Minh Phong from the Hanoi Socio-Economic Institute cited the recent survey as saying that only customers with stable income purchase commodities at supermarts.
The survey, conducted by Asian Development Bank (ADB), Mekong Private Sector Development Facility (MPDF) and the Central Institute for Economic Management (CIEM), showed that 60% of poor households in Hanoi have never purchased commodities at supemarts, while the figure is 35% in HCM City. Meanwhile, 80% of those listed as customers with stable income go to supermarts regularly.
Ngan, Hue and neighbourers in the Trung Hoa – Nhan Chinh new urban area said they go to Big C supermart several times a month. Ngan, who is retired, has VND1.4mil a month, while Hue, who is now working for the electromechanics and rural development company, can earn over VND2mil ($125). Hue is listed among those, who have stable income at the average level in the society
In the current conditions of high inflation, Ngan and Hue have to tighten their belt and think carefully before deciding what to buy for meals.
“We don’t have money to go to supemarts everyday. We can only go there at weekend, when supemarts offer promotion campaigns, which allows us to buy suitable commodities at reasonable prices,” Ngan said.
Nguyen Vinh Phu, Chairman of the Hanoi Supermart Association, also said that only those, who have the income at average level and higher, are the popular customers of supermarts.
