Tariff increase proposal on cars, cell phones, cosmetics
The Ministry of Industry and Trade has asked the Ministry of Finance to consider raising tariffs to discourage imports on some commodities, like cosmetics, mobile phones, liquor and cars with nine seats or less.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade said it will help narrow trade gaps, solve the traffic problem and reduce expenditure.
It also proposed increasing the tariff on two to three liter cars to 60 percent from 50 percent.
If the proposal is successful, the tariff on cars over three liters would be raised to 70 percent from 50 percent.
The tariff on mobile phones would be increased from 5 percent to 8 percent, the highest level permitted by the World Trade Organization (WTO).
