- On April 26, 1957: The predecessor, the Vietnam Bank for Construction under the Ministry of Finance, was established pursuant to Decision No. 177/TTg of the Prime Minister.
- On June 24, 1981: Renamed as Vietnam Bank for Investment and Construction.
- On November 14, 1990: Renamed as Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam.
- On April 23, 2012: The State Bank of Vietnam granted License No. 84 for the establishment and operation of the Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam.
- On January 24, 2014: Officially listed on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange (Ticker: BID).
- By the end of 2014: BIDV had established correspondent banking relationships with over 1,700 banks and bank branches in 122 countries and territories worldwide.
- On May 25, 2015: BIDV completed the merger with Mekong Housing Bank (MHB), expanding its network to 180 branches, 798 transaction offices, 1,822 ATMs, and 15,962 POS terminals across all 63 provinces and cities nationwide.
- By the end of 2015: BIDV had established a commercial presence in six countries and territories: Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, the Czech Republic, the Russian Federation, and Taiwan.
- On February 20, 2020: Increased charter capital to VND 40,220,180,000,000.
- In March 2022: Increased charter capital to VND 50,585,238,000,000.
- In January 2025: Increased charter capital to VND 68,975,152,680,000.
