Shares rise despite low liquidity

Shares rose slightly yesterday even as market liquidity plunged, however investors kept a close watch on the market fluctuations with little capital injection.

On the HCM City Stock Exchange, the VN-Index gained 0.19 per cent or 1.1 points to close at 570.46 points.

The trading volume and value continued to show a decline over the previous sessions with roughly 56.7 million shares traded, 20 per cent lower than Wednesday's recorded value, worth a total of VND1.18 trillion (US$56 million).

The southern bourse did not witness any major fluctuations during the trading session as both sellers and buyers adopted a wait-and-watch approach. As a result, supply and demand did not meet.

A slow pace of transactions was registered in large-cap stocks with the VN30-Index, tracking the southern city's largest shares by capitalisation and liquidity, dipped 0.1 per cent to end the day at 629.16 points, although gainers outnumbered losers by 12-9.

Among the losers, Hoa Phat Group (HPG) shed VND8,000 (US$0.38) per share, or as much as 14.41 per cent, compared to yesterday's value of VND 47,500 (US$2.26).

Insurance Bao Viet Holdings (BVH), Kinh Do Corporation (KDC), Hoa Sen Goup (HSG), and Military Bank (MBB) were also some of the big names among the decliners. On the other hand, Gemardept (GMD), a logistics company, Masan Group (MSN), and Da Nang Rubber Corporation (DRC) were among nine others who posted gains yesterday.

Overall, there were 112 advancers and 103 decliners on the southern bourse.

On the Ha Noi Stock Exchange, transactions were also on a slow pace as only 36.3 million shares changed hands with a total value of nearly VND 388 billion (US$18.4 million), respectively 55 per cent and 27 per cent lower than Wednesday's figures.

The HNX-Index managed to close slightly higher yesterday, adding 0.12 per cent to reach 80 points, while the HNXFF-Index, which is composed of stocks with minimum free float rate of 5 per cent, closed 0.21 per cent lower at 80.26 points.

Tracking the capital city's top stocks, the HNX30-Index edged up 0.03 per cent to finish the day at 160.98 points.

In a low-pace trading session yesterday, securities stocks emerged as market supporters as they posted gains, including HCM City-listed BIDV Securities (BSI), Saigon Securities (SSI), HCM City Securities (HCM) and Ha Noi – listed Bao Viet Securities (BVS), Kim Long Securities (KLS), and VNDirect Securities (VND).
