VN-Index edges up seventh day 

Vietnam’s benchmark VN-Index extended its winning streak to seven consecutive trading sessions on January 17 as large-cap stocks continued to buoy the market.

The gauge of 301 companies and five mutual funds listed on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange built up 0.28 percent, or 0.99 points, to close at 358.86 points.

Across the benchmark, 91 stocks advanced, 125 dropped, while 90 remained unchanged.

Trading on the city bourse fell by 30 percent in volume and 60 percent in value over the previous day as 23.73 million shares changed hands at a total value of VND349 billion.

The fourth largest listed bank Saigon Thuong Tin Joint Stock Commercial Bank or Sacombank (STB) topped the list of most active shares in volume with 1.13 million shares changing hands.

Saigon Securities Inc. (SSI), the country’s largest brokerage, followed with 800,580 shares.

Transport Engineering Construction & Business Investment Joint Stock Company 584 (NTB) came next with 723,520 shares traded.

Meca Vneco Investment & Electricity Construction Joint Stock Company (VES) revived 7.69 percent to close at VND1,400.

Saigon Beverages Joint Stock Company (TRI) restored 5.26 percent to finish at VND2,000.

Bao Viet Holdings (BVH), HAI Agrochem Joint Stock Company (HAI), Transport Engineering Construction & Business Investment Joint Stock Company 584 (NTB), and Phu Tai Joint Stock Company (PTB) all rocketed 5 percent to VND46,200, VND21,200, VND4,200, and VND12,600 respectively.

Vimedimmex Medi - Pharma Joint Stock Company (VMD) slashed 14.65 percent to finish at VND16,900. The company will advance dividends for the first six months of the year 2011 in cash at a ratio of 10 percent on February 20. Moreover, the company will issue 8,141,196 shares to its current shareholders at a ratio of 1:1 and a price of VND15,000 per share.

Rang Dong Plastic Joint Stock Company (RDP) gave up 14.43 percent to close at VND8,300.

Viky Plastic Joint Stock Company (VKP) skipped 11.11 percent to VND800.

Meanwhile, Hanoi’s HNX-Index of the smaller bourse in the north closed down 0.79 percent, or 0.45 points, to close at 56.55 points. More than 19.37 million shares changed hands at a value of VND158.08 billion.

The UPCoM-Index of unlisted shares mounted 0.48 percent, or 0.16 points, to close at 33.62 points. A total of 59,100 shares changed hands at a value of VND235 million.
