Sepon copper production up
Production of Sepon copper during the first quarter of 2011 was up 7 percent compared to the same period last year, with 18,454 tonnes of copper cathode were produced, according to MMG LXML Sepon.
The company reported the increase in copper production is a result of a US$60.4 million capital project to expand processing facilities. The expansion was completed earlier this year, and increased production capacity by nearly 25 percent. MMG LXML Sepon expects to produce up to 80,000 tonnes of copper cathode in 2011.
Another highlight was the announcement in February of improved copper reserves for Sepon. The mine's copper reserves increased by 10 percent during 2010 because of continued exploration, MMG LXML Sepon reported.
Gold production during the quarter was 19,081 poured ounces, 25 percent lower t han for the same period last year. The reason for this is the use of several new gold pits was delayed and work in the existing pit was slowed by wet ground conditions. Annual production projections remain unchanged for 2011 at 70,000 – 85,000 ounces of gold.
Director of MMG LXML Sepon Mr Saman Anneka said whilst copper production is increasing, gold production is gradually declining.
“The production of Sepon gold peaked in 2005. However, the value of gold production has remained relatively constant despite declining volumes. This is because of the increase in the price of gold over recent years.”
Work continues to evaluate potential deposits of both oxide and primary gold within the mining lease area.
