Japan grants for silk production
The Japanese government has provided a USD 4.49-million financial package for two projects on sustainable production of silk textile in rural areas and the livelihood improvement of ethnic people.
The fund is provided through the World Bank and it will be divided into two amounts. The first one is 1.8 million for the silk textile production project, which is designed to promote capacity building in silk textile production and poverty reduction through income generation of ethnic people, mainly women.
The second one of USD 2.6 million will be used for improving living condition of 28,800 families in remote areas which the Poverty Reduction Fund will administer the financial package in the most-difficult-to-access districts to support self-help groups to empower women and help them develop sustainable livelihoods. Under the project, new graduates and youth leaders will be given an access to training of trainer course on community facilitation and help local farmers have their goods access marketplaces. This project is designed to materialize the millennium development goals regarding poverty eradication.
A signing ceremony for the agreement was held last Friday at the Ministry of Finance between Deputy Minister of Finance Mrs. Viengthong Syphandone and the World Bank Country Manager to Laos Mrs. Keiko Miwa.
The event was witnessed by Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce Mrs. Khemmany Pholsena and Japanese Ambassador to Laos Junko Yokota and relevant officials of both sides.
