Dell Corp., Datacom target booming consumer IT industry

Global IT equipment manufacturer Dell Corporation has appointed leading information technology product distributor Datacom Co Ltd as its authorised distributor in Laos, after over 12 years of business cooperation.

Datacom is the authorised distributor for the entire range of Dell consumer products ranging from computers, IT peripherals and enterprises server group.

“Laos is an important country with a top IT equipment supply. Dell products now account for a large market share,” said Dell Corp's Indochina sub region General Manager, Mr. Anothai Wettayakorn.

“Laos has the third largest revenue or sales of Dell products and is the second country in terms of growth rate,” Mr. Anothai said at the business launch on Thursday in Vientiane.

Mr. Anothai compared Dell product sales in five countries: Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

Dell products entered the Lao market in 1998 through Datacom. In 1999 the manufacturer signed a distributor agreement with Datacom, which has since been Dell's sole dealer selling products directly to customers.

Datacom President Mr. Thanongsinh Kanlaya said “As Dell's authorised distributor, Datacom will establish dealers or retailers in the provinces to sell products to end users.”

The retailers will be set up in Luang Prabang, Champassak and Savannankhet provinces, as well as Vientiane.

Datacom has the right to carry the extensive range of Dell products such as Vostro, Inspiron and XPS notebook and desktop, LCD monitors, and ESG products (Power Edge, Power Volt).

The agreement between the two companies adds a new dimension to Datacom's vast product and service portfolio to target the booming consumer IT industry and is also intended to expand into new markets.

“We are delighted to partner with Dell and believe the partnership adds a new dimension to our current consumer offerings,” Mr. Thanongsinh said.

However, Dell is not without its competitors. “Four main brands are Dell's competitors. They come from America and China, including Taiwan, but we don't want to reveal their names,” Mr. Anothai said.

Vientiane has many electronics dealers selling various computer brands, with most customers working in the hydropower, mining or medical sector, according to a report by Vientiane Times earlier this year.

Laptop and notebook computers are selling well in Laos, boosted by falling prices which have dropped by 30-40 percent since 2009. At present a notebook computer can be bought for as little as 2 million kip.

The study noted that the best selling brands at Lada & Co and Micro-Info are Acer, HP and Lenovo, while Samsung and Sony devices are more popular with shoppers at K Plaza.
