Internet provides boost to advertising industry
The number of Internet users in Laos has increased dramatically and has created a new market, according to one well known web designer.
BlueGrass Design Group Co. Ltd Group Director, Mr Praseuth Banchongphakdy, made the comment yesterday after the government reported that the number of registered Internet users increased by 200 to 26,000 in the first six months of the current fiscal year.
The total number of Internet users around the country is expected to reach about 500,000 this year according to a report from the Ministry of Planning and Investment.
Mr Praseuth said the increase in Internet users across the country will bring new business opportunities for webmasters.
An increasing number of Lao people are beginning to use smart phones which allow users to access websites from anywhere they have reception.
The total number of home and mobile phone users in Laos is about 5.4 million - about 83 percent of the country's total population.
Mr Praseuth noted that webmasters can create online trading and retail pages that allow people to purchase goods online.
The Internet is one of the cheapest advertising tools compared to traditional forms of media as it is not expensive to establish and maintain websites.
Mr Praseuth said that online advertising has become a global trend. He cited Facebook and Google as examples of popular websites that provide a free service but charge for ad space.
Mr Praseuth said one possible business could be a news website. Web developers can provide free information to users while collecting advertising fees from companies that want to sell their products online.
