Poultry price poised to rise
The price of poultry will increase during the Chinese and Vietnamese New Year, according to vendors in Thongkhankham Market in Vientiane yesterday, but the price of sweet cakes will be the same as last year.

Thongkhankham poultry ve ndor Ms Chan said the poultry price will increase a little during the festivities. The Chinese and Vietnamese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year, falls on February 2. Ms Chan said the poultry price will start increasing a little this week. “The important days of the New Year will be February 1-6. During this time the prices will increase as demand soars,” she said.
She said price increases are normal during this period and take place each year. At present, 1kg of duck sells for 30,000 to 40,000 kip, chicken 25,000 to 30,000 kip, and turkey costs 65,000 kip.
On February 1, the price of duck is expected to rise to 45,000 kip, chicken to 35,000 kip and turkey will be 70,000 kip per kg or higher.
Ms Chan said supply will keep up with demand over the New Year. After the celebrations prices will return to their regular levels by the second and third weeks of February.
At present Ms Chan sells 70kg of duck and 100kg of chicken per day.
During last year's celebrations she sold 200kg of duck and 200kg of chicken each day. With the ever-growing number of Chinese and Vietnamese people living in Vientiane, Ms Chan expects sales to rise again this year.
