Borikhamsay faces rising rice price
Director of the Borikhamsay Province Industry and Commerce Service, Mr. Sa-ngouane, said that rice price in the province was relatively high, rising from 6,000 to 8,400 kip per kilo between July and August.
''The current price of grade A glutinous rice is 8,400 kip per kg, grade B is 7,500 kip, and grade A ordinary rice is 10,000 kip per kg. The rice price is high if compared to Vientiane, Khammouane and Savannakhet,'' said Mr. Sa-ngouane Savang.
The high rice price in the province is attributed to the damage of rice crop by natural disasters and rice export to overseas market, according to Mr. Sa-ngouane.
The rice market management in the province is not practical as the province has no proper legal mechanism to apply to rice millers and traders. Rice hoarding by rice millers is prevalent while the authorities fail to take proper action against those engaged in rice hoarding.''Our key weakness is that we have no budget to intervene in the rice market to stabilise the rice price. We don?t have any representative company to buy rice from local farmers,'' said the official.
''Previously, despite natural disasters like drought, we had enough rice for consumption. But this year, we don?t have enough rice because local farmers have sold rice to neighbouring provinces and overseas market,''said Mr. Sa-ngouane.
