Lao television viewers seeing triple

Televisions offering 3D viewing first came on the Lao market in the middle of last year and are steadily growing in popularity with consumers, according to an electronic goods supplier.

General Manger of K-Plaza shopping centre Mr Phonexay Phomphakdy said that 3D televisions are getting a good response from customers in Laos.

“Since we introduced the product in the middle of last year they've become better known and sales are increasing each month.”

The centre is an official distributor of Samsung brand products and was the first to offer Samsung brand 3D televisions in Laos last year.

A 3D viewing experience was previously unavailable in Laos, but now living rooms across the country can install a comprehensive entertainment system.

3D TVs sold by the centre range in size from 40 to 60 inches. “Most customers prefer a bigger screen,” said Mr Phonexay.

He added most clients are businesspeople, companies, foreigners and Lao expatriates visiting Laos who buy a TV for their relatives here.

“Our customers are not just from Vientiane, but also the provinces.”

A 3D television will set a shopper back by between 18 to 50 million kip, depending on the size and specifications of the set. The 3D accessories are sold separately.

To experience the 3D viewing experience, a 3D TV, 3D content (movie), 3D Active Glasses and a compatible DVD player are required.

The 3D viewing experience has been available in movie theatres for some time but the technology is relatively new in televisions.

3D televisions first become commercially available early last year and have proved popular in many developed countries.

A 3D television is a television that employs techniques of 3D presentation, such as stereoscopic capture, multi-view capture, or 2D plus depth, and a 3D display – a special viewing device to project a television programme into a realistic three-dimensional field.

“See vivid new dimension in picture depth and action that leaps off the TV screen” claims an advertisement for 3D televisions on the Samsung website.

3D televisions are also available in many other brands such as Sony, Toshiba, LG and Panasonic and all unveiled 3D-capable HDTVs. More and more 3D movies are being produced and 24-hour 3D television channels are expected soon.
