28/01: Daily updates of the Lao Securities Exchange

The index experienced some turbulence, but not even the strongest tempest could slow down this vessel. The index temporarily settled for a rocky 1,675 points, getting ready for its critical sprint toward the 2,000 checkpoint by the end of next week. The LSX index should expect some shaky flights as more investors are preparing their escaping parachutes.

1. Executive Summary

  • The Lao Securities Exchange: The market saw a moment of hesitation before the stormy voyage of the two listed stocks, as they caught another strong wind. The prices of BCEL and EDL-Gen eased respectively toward 14,500 and 7,700 Kip per share, engraving another maximum gain to their scoreboard. Even the most optimistic investors start to raise their eye-brows to EDL-Gen as they could not purchase any more of this share. On the other hand, BCEL’s stock board looks like a carnival to those eager eyes.
  • Lao officials delve into corporate finance amid the rapid expansion of the Securities Market: SECO and the IMF held a training session in Vientiane yesterday to provide deeper insight on corporate governance. The training hinged around important topics such as ‘securities and corporate governance’, ‘guidelines on corporate governance’, ‘transparency and disclosure’, among others. The Vientiane Times.

Investors could not hold on tight to their BCEL shares, fearing the burning price might leave too deep of a scar. The T+2 traders accepted a well worth 9% on their BCEL investments, while investors of EDL-Gen showed a more conservative reaction. EDL-Gen squeezed out only 251,000 traded shares today, contracting by almost 39% compared with yesterday; as a result its total turnover slid by 36% to only 1.9 billion Kip. BCEL has won the popularity vote in term of trading value, equal roughly to 65% of total market turnover. Investors apparently showed a more open-minded perception about BCEL, but careful judgment is necessary when assessing the price of this stock.
