New thermal power plant built in southern province
The Electricity of Vietnam Sunday began construction of its Duyen Hai 1 Thermal Power Plant in the Mekong Delta province of Tra Vinh.
When it begins power generation in late 2014, the 1,245MW coal-based plant, to cost VND29.25 trillion (US$1.5 billion), will supply 7.2 billion kWh to the national grid.
It is one of three plants with a total capacity of 4,400 MW to be built at the $5 billion Duyen Hai Thermal Power Center in Duyen Hai District. The second is also due for completion in 2014.
The region has two other thermal electricity plants - the 2,800MW gas-fueled O Mon in Can Tho and the 5,200MW Kien Luong in Kien Giang Province.
The generator for the first plant has been finished at the $2-billion O Mon facility, which will have four plants.
Work on the $6.7-billion Kien Luong Thermal Power Center is expected to begin this year and finish by 2013.
Vietnam’s power generation is expected to top 97 billion kWh this year, up 13 percent year on year.
