Seeking ways to penetrate EU market

The European Commission has informed the Vietnamese delegation to the EU that as of July 15, the EU will remove the anti-dumping tax on roughly 35.5 percent of bicycles imported from Vietnam.

The removal of the anti-dumping tax will help many Vietnamese enterprises overcome difficulties. Our reporter interviewed Le Quoc Tao, Head of the Vietnam Automobile, Motorcycle and Bicycle Association, on the issue.

VOV: Could you tell us how the EC’s decision to remove the anti-dumping tax on Vietnamese bicycles will impact on Vietnamese enterprises?

Mr. Tao: It is unreasonable to impose high anti-dumping tariffs on Vietnamese businesses when they have had to survive in a very difficult conditions for a quite a while. So, the EC’s decision will help Vietnamese enterprises penetrate the market again.

VOV: Could you let us know what businesses are planning?

Mr. Tao: In my opinion, there are positive signs that Vietnamese goods will be exported to the European market from now until early next year. Production at some bicycle and motorcycle manufacturers will not start right away, enterprises must first contact the European importers.

The bicycle industry is not like other industries such as garments and textiles or footwear. It takes a long time to start up production again.

Businesses need to access information on the European market, restart production and draw up plans to export goods to the EU.

VOV: Currently, many bicycle enterprises are still worrying about the tax rate. If the tax rate is higher than 10 percent, how can the association and other management agencies provide further support?

Mr. Tao: Although the EU is removing anti-dumping tax, other kinds of taxes remain high including the import tax and value added tax. Therefore, the prices of Vietnamese goods going to the EU market often increases by 2-2.5 times. Therefore, it is not simple to penetrate the market due to price competitiveness.

The association cannot give financial support to enterprises but it can help enterprises with updated information on the market. But it will provide information to businesses so that they can plan how much they will export to the EU market in future.
