Ben Tre builds widest road

The Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta province of Ben Tre on Monday began construction of the province's widest road, which links Giao Long Port with Ben Tre City.

The 5.3-km road runs from the port in Chau Thanh District's Giao Long Commune to Nguyen Thi Dinh Road in Ben Tre City's Phu Hung Ward.

The road, which will be financed with a VND622 billion (US$32.7 million) Government bond, has a width of 32.5m and will be completed within four years.

Nguyen Thai Xay, Chairman of the Ben Tre Province People's Committee, said the road would play an important role in facilitating transportation of goods betweenthe two points.

The Ministry of Transport has also agreed to upgrade Giao Long Port from a river port into a seaport.

If the port is upgraded, goods from Ben Tre Province's industrial parks can be shipped overseas directly without transiting via HCM City's ports. The port can also ship goods for neighbouring provinces in the Delta.
