Maritime economy key to development
Viet Nam is determined to become a country with a strong and advanced maritime economy, President Nguyen Minh Triet has said.
Triet delivered the message at the opening ceremony of the 2010 Viet Nam Sea and Island Festival in the central province of Quang Binh yesterday.
The State leader stressed the 21st century would be dominated by the development of international maritime policies.
As a country boasting some of the largest territorial waters in Southeast Asia, Viet Nam had developed its own maritime strategy through to 2020, identifying major issues and challenges from globalisation to maintaining peace, stability and prosperity in the region, he said.
Triet emphasised the need to improve both public awareness and State management of territorial waters and islands and use marine resources to improve people's livelihoods, while ensuring environmental protection.
At the ceremony, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment launched a contest to honour organisations and individuals for their outstanding contributions to the protection and development of the sea and territorial islands.
The festival is part of the 2010 Viet Nam Sea and Island Week from June 1-8, which also includes a trade fair, a sand-painting contest and a seminar on biodiversity.
