HCM City asked to build smaller flats
The Construction Ministry has asked HCM City to consider the building of single and two-occupant flats of less than 30sq.m.
The Dat Lanh Company proposed the buildng of 20 sq.m apartments for low-income earners in April but was stymied by the Housing Law that stipulates that residences for sale must be of at least 45sq.m.
Welfare houses must be at least 30sq.m.
But the HCM City Construction Department ruled that the smaller apartments would breach t he Housing Law.
Now Deputy Construction Minister Nguyen Tran Nam has asked the HCM City People's Committee to reconsider the company's proposal and guide it so that it can complete the pilot project within the law as well as meeting demand.
The company should be allowed to undertake a pilot programme if the demand for smaller flats was great, and the ministry will propose changes to the Housing Law to meet reality if neccesary, the deputy minister said.
"If all investors build only high-grade houses for the rich, where will low-income earners live?" he asked
"Building apartments that cost less than VND1-billion is a praiseworthy tendency."
Dat Lanh Company Deputy Director Nguyen Van Duc said: "Surveys showed that more than 80 per cent of people support the idea of smaller apartments because they suit the income of many people,"
The price for the smaller apartments is only VND300 million (US$15,780), and customers can buy them in monthly instalments of VND2-4 million.
