WTO sets up panel on Vietnam’s lawsuit

The World Trade Organisation has decided to establish a panel that reviews the US ’s anti-dumping measures imposed on frozen warm water shrimp from Vietnam.

The decision was made after Vietnam’s second request for the establishment of the panel at a session of the WTO’s Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) in Geneva on May 18.

Tran Thi Thu Hang, Deputy Chief Representative of the Vietnamese Permanent Mission to the UN, the WTO and other international organisations in Geneva, stated that one purpose of the understanding on rules and procedures governing the settlement of disputes (DSU) is to promote resolution of disputes through discussions between the parties.

“Therefore, we would welcome the opportunity to resolve this dispute at any time during the process. We believe that Vietnam is fully justified in proceeding with the second request and pursuing the relevant issues through the panel and Appellate Body process,” she said.

Also at the session, several countries proposed their involvement in the lawsuit as the third party.
