Positive signs from online labour market

The online labour market saw many positive signs in the first quarter of 2010 as the demand index fell by 6.5 percent while the supply index rose by 14.1 percent compared to the fourth quarter of last year.

The figures were released by VietnamWorks.com, the largest online recruitment site in Vietnam, in its Online Employment Indicator Report in the first quarter of this year, which was announced on May 17.

While the online demand for employment in the first quarter of 2009 fell by 20 percent compared to the fourth quarter of the previous year, the market’s demand this year has seen a drop of only 6.5 percent despite being affected by the long Tet (Lunar New Year) Festival, said the Managing Director of VietnamWorks.com Chris Harvey.

“This shows positive signs in the online recruitment market,” he said.

According to Harvey , during the global economic crisis, job hunters were afraid that if they found employment it may only be in the short term as many businesses were going bust. Therefore, the increase in the number of jobs advertised online reflects a new confidence in job seekers as the economy recovers and they are able to find better jobs.

The VietnamWorks.com report also showed that civil engineering, accounting/auditing, banking, electricity/electronics and aviation/tourism/hotels have the highest demand for human resources.

Retail sales, accounting/finance, administrative/secretarial, information technology-software and marketing also have a need for more employees, said the report.

VietnamWorks.com provides daily information on more than 4,000 new jobs registered by the country’s biggest companies. The website boasts over 60,000 hits each day.
