Fruit, vegetable exports rocket by 25%

The country's fruits and vegetables export turnover reached US$165 million in the first four months of the year, an increase of 25 per cent over the same period last year, according to the General Statistics Office of Viet Nam.

Of the figures, March's export turnover was highest with $45.8 million, an increase of 32.4 per cent over the same period last year, while the April figure accounted for $45 million.

In March, fruit and vegetable export turnover to large markets increased sharply, including exports to China reaching $4.26 million, a 30.2 per cent growth over the previous month, while exports to Holland reached $3.24 million, up 180 per cent over the previous month.

Products with high export turnover in March included roses at more than $100,000, mushrooms $1.5 million, dragon fruit $2.93 million, and in canned gherkin reached $1.2 million to Russia, accounting for 50 per cent of total export value to Russia in March

Ngyen Van Ky, General Secrtary of the Viet Nam Fruits and Vegetable Association (Vinafuit) said that export turnoer had increased annuall because of higher export prices.

He said that the domestic enterprises needed to concentrate on expanding export markets and improving product quality to enhance expor value.

At resent, negotiations with he Republic of South Kora are underway to accept increased Vietnamese fruit and vegetable imports.

Recently at the Seoul International Foodstuff Industry Exhibition 2010, South Korean businesses expressed their interest in Vietnamese fruit and vegetable kiosks which were displayed at the exhibition.

According to Vinafruit, the country predicts $482 million in fruits and vegetables export turnover this year, an increase of 10 per cent over the previous year.

Viet Nam's fruits and vegetables products are exported to 50 countries and territories, of which China and Japan markets accounts for 40 per cent of total export turnover.

The country's key export fruits and vegetable products include canned fruits, dried fruits, gherkins, dragon fruits, longan, durian, pomelo and dried and fresh vegetables.

Last year, during the economic downturn, Viet Nam earned $439 million from fruit and vegetable exports.
