Vietnam resumes fish export to Russia

Vietnam will resume the export of tra fish to Russia in May 2010, according to Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Luong Le Phuong.

Phuong said that the tra fish export to Russia has stopped since the end of the first quarter due to some undisclosed problems.

“However, export would be resumed in the time to come after the Steering Committee on exporting tra fish to Russia had working sessions with the Russian agency in charge of inspecting the quality of import products which shows positive result,” Phuong said.

Nevertheless, Phuong said that Vietnam will still be facing a lot of difficulties attempting to export tra fish to Russia because Russia is trying to tighten imports and control the quality of imports. The Government of Russia is following the policy on reducing fish import volume in general in an effort to protect local production.

Phuong said that despite difficulties, it will not be likely to see an order from the Government of Russia to stop importing fish, the thing that once happened in 2008.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, besides tra fish, Russia’s demand for other seafood products from Vietnam such as Shrimp, dried seafood and surimi have been increasing. The number of Vietnamese enterprises that register to export seafood products to Russia has also increased.

Also according to Phuong, the Steering Committee on exporting tra fish to Russia has recently suggested to the Russian side to give credit ranking to enterprises. This means that Russian prestigious enterprises that plan to have long term business relations with Vietnam, will be able to enjoy the 2-5 percent price discounts. The credit ranking will be given by Vietnamese enterprises and Vietnamese associations.

This is an interesting solution which aims to encourage Russian enterprises to import Vietnam’s products and benefits Vietnamese enterprises. With the solution, Vietnam will be able to find out prestigious businesses which have stable collection volume and establish long term relations.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers VASEP, the committee in charge of compiling the draft decree on the production and consumption of tra fish in Mekong Delta was set up on May 7.

The compilation committee is put under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, which includes 17 members, headed by Pham Anh Tuan, Deputy General Director of the Fisheries Department. Besides, the committee gathers representatives from other relevant ministries and branches, including the Ministries of Finance, Industry and Trade, Planning and Investment, State Bank of Vietnam and VASEP.

The compilation has the function of building up policies to develop tra and basa, the key export items of Vietnam
