Australian mining firms seek business opportunities

Ten Australian mining equipment and technology service providers are visiting Viet Nam from yesterday on a three- day trip to explore business opportunities.

Following the success of the inaugural Australian mining mission to Viet Nam in 2009, this group forms the second mining mission and this time includes major mining contractors and investors, as well as leading equipment, technology and mining service providers from Australia.

Australian Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner Tony Burchill said: "Australia is a world leader in all aspects of mining and this year we are bringing companies that are at the forefront of service and technology to Viet Nam to help further develop the mining sector.

As mining is a key sector for Viet Nam, such an initiative is expected to bring significant trade and industry development benefits as well as offering attractive commercial opportunities for Australian businesses."

The Australian mission will include a half-day seminar supported by the Viet Nam Coal and Minerals Industries Group and sponsored by ANZ Viet Nam in Ha Noi today.

The group will also conduct various site visits and meet with local Vietnamese companies involved in the mining sector.

Australian Ambassador to Viet Nam Allaster Cox said initiatives such as the mining mission help strengthen the bilateral relationship between Australia and Viet Nam.

"In adapting to some of the world's most remote and harsh operating environments, our industry has become highly innovative, productive and efficient and is now exporting mining solutions throughout the world and we want to see greater collaboration between Australia and Viet Nam," he said.

According to the Australian Trade Commission, Australia has some 2,500 companies involved in the mining sector employing 320,000 workers. Approximately 60 per cent of the world's mines use technology developed in Australia.
