Central Highlands needs to develop crops, industry

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has asked the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak to try harder to expand the acreage put under high-value cash crops while stepping up the processing industry and the agricultural mechanical engineering.

Speaking at a meeting with key officials from the province yesterday, the Prime Minister praised the great efforts made by the provincial Party committee and administration and people of various ethnic groups in the past few years, particularly in 2009.

He commended the province for strictly implementing the central Government's instructions and adopting several measures to help stop the economic downturn, maintain the growth rate and ensure social security.

In 2009 the province posted growth of 11.4 percent against that of 5.3 percent of the whole country, with per capita income of VND13.9 million (US$770). The number of poor households dropped to 12.4 percent from 53 percent in 2008.

"In spite of the great success the province has gained in 2009, I ask you to work harder to improve people's living conditions and put into practice Government policies on ethnic minorities and religion so that Dak Lak Province will work with other provinces in completing the plan developed by the 10th National Party Congress in 2006," said Dung.

Regarding the 2010 plan, Dung asked local leaders to put great effort into organisational work so that the province could increase its GDP to 12 per cent and reduce the number of poor households to 10 percent, particularly those of ethnic minority groups.

"One of the province's strongest potentials lies within the 20,000ha of rubber plantations and 200,000ha of coffee," Dung said.

"You should review the plans of 108 reservoirs for hydro electric power to judge their economic efficiency, environmental impact and safety."

The Prime Minister instructed the provincial leadership to co-ordinate with relevant ministries and functional agencies to re-organise coffee production as well trade with emphasis on advanced technology and developing seeds with high yield and drought tolerance.

He also asked the province to review its development plan based on the recommendation of the Party Politburo so that Buon Ma Thuot City would become a major regional hub and driver for the province's economic development.

On the same day, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung visited the Tay Nguyen Steering Committee.

He asked the committee members to accelerate their inspection activities to help promote socio-economic development and ensure firm national defence and security in the Central Highlands.
