Zone okays underground tank plan

Dung Quat Economic Zone's Management Board has given approval to the Viet Nam Petroleum Underground Godown Co., Ltd to implement the first phase of its underground petroleum warehouse project.

According to the management board, the 600,000cu.m underground warehouse will cover 40ha in the eastern industrial zone of the Dung Quat Economic Zone. The US$340 million project is expected to be implemented this year.

"The project is a significant operational element of the Dung Quat Oil Refinery, as it will help to ensure a sufficient supply of petroleum to satisfy the country's socio-economic development, food safety and international transportation demands," said the board's head Nguyen Xuan Thuy.

This will be the country's second underground petroleum warehouse. The first one is currently under construction in the southern coastal province of Ba Ria - Vung Tau.

Management board leaders have asked the investor to ensure that environmental protection measures are taken when the project is put into operation.
