JICA accelerates ODA projects for Vietnam
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will sign a loan agreement this March for two new construction projects: One to build a new terminal at Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport and one to build a highway linking Noi Bai and the Nhat Tan area of Hanoi.
Tsuno Motonori, Chief Representative of JICA in Vietnam, says his agency is coordinating its efforts with the Vietnamese Ministry of Transport to expedite procedures and tendering for these two projects.
JICA is considering providing loans to the North-South Highway project, which got underway in 2009. The agency plans to provide technical assistance in training human resources for building and operating the highway.
Mr. Motonori notes that private businesses will take charge of equipping and operating the Lach Huyen seaport.
Private capital will be mobilized in the mode of public-private partnership to meet the increasing demand for infrastructure construction in Vietnam, he says.
In addition to these major projects, JICA will continue with other projects in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
Hanoi, which is busy preparing for the grand celebration of its 1000th anniversary this October, will receive JICA assistance for a series of projects to build the Nhat Tan or Vietnam-Japan Friendship bridge over the Red River, to build urban tram systems, to improve the city’s environment through dredging lakes and expanding pumping stations, and to help the city prevent flooding.
