Delta joins hands for development
Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung has approved a co-operation programme between provinces in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta for development of agriculture and rural areas.
Under it, the Southwestern Steering Committee will work closely with ministries, sectors and People's Committees of the 12 provinces and Can Tho City for the implementation of projects.
The projects include developing the production and consumption of rice, fruits, tra catfish, and shrimp, providing vocational training for rural people, and strengthening mechanisms and policies for developing these sectors.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs have agreed to include the programme in the Government's action plan for implementing Resolution No 26NQ-TW on agriculture, farmers and rural areas.
The Delta grows 53 percent of the country's rice and accounts for 90 percent of rice exports.
It also has the largest areas under catfish and shrimp farming in the country.
Last year it produced 20.6 million tonnes of paddy and 2.6 million tonnes of seafood, 1.6 million tonnes and 340,000 tonnes, respectively, more than in 2008.
It achieved 10.1 percent economic growth last year.
