Clearance bonus for Tet

Investors in major projects in the capital are giving mass compensation payments for land clearance to residents ahead of the Tet holidays.

Trinh Nhu Ha, Vice Chairman of the Duong Noi Ward People's Committee in Ha Dong District, said that compensation had been paid for three projects in the last 10 days – Duong Noi Urban Area Project, Le Trong Tan Urban Area Project and An Hung Residential Buildings Project. Daily, investors plan to pay out VND6.5 billion (US$342,000) to nearly 1,000 households.

Nguyen Hong Yen, Chairman of Thanh Oai District People's Committee, said that over the three weeks leading up to Tet holidays, the district planned to pay VND900 billion ($47 million) to residents.

Compensation payments are also being carried out in other districts such as Tu Liem and Tay Ho.

Nguyen Trung Hong, a resident of Hoang Van Thu Street in Ha Dong District, said he had received VND100 million ($5,200) in compensation for the loss of part of his land.

Trinh Hoa Binh, Vice Head of the Land Clearance Board of Ha Noi, said residents whose land had been taken for development projects would be able to buy an apartment in a resettlement area or in a residential quarter.

Hong said all households in his village had been told by the land clearance management unit to complete necessary documentation to receive service land.

However, villagers had yet to be told where they would be resettled, he said.

"We would like more detailed information publicised," Hong said.

Nguyen Dinh Vay, a resident of La Noi Village, was of a similar view.

"If the service land fund is publicised soon, people would have no qualms about losing their land for transport development or urban areas," he said.
