Three trillion VND for expanding southern traffic artery

A contract on the expansion of the National Highway 51 worth 3.3 trillion VND (184.8 million USD) was signed in Hanoi on Nov. 12 by the Vietnam Road Department and the Bien Hoa-Vung Tau Expressway Development Joint Stock Co (BVEC).

Under the contract, the 72.7km road section, linking from the two southern provinces of Dong Nai and Ba Ria-Vung Tau, will be expanded to 32.9 m in width to accommodate six motor lanes and two general lanes.

The expansion includes the upgrade of 22 bridges and construction of 10 flyovers in densely-populated areas.

The contract will be carried out under the BOT method (build-operate-transfer) over a period of 24 years, including three years of construction, from last August.

Put into operation a decade ago, the existing National Highway 51 is overloaded with a flow of 14,000 vehicles per day and night.

Traffic flow on the highway is forecast to reach 37,000 in 2010 and 96,000 in 2020.
