Minimum wage to rise in Vietnam

Minimum wages at foreign companies and organizations in the country’s least developed areas will increase 8.6 percent to VND1 million (US$56) next year, according to a new government decree.

But minimum wages for skilled workers in these areas, designated as Zone 4, must be at least VND1.07 million.

The decree stipulates that employees at foreign firms in Zone 3, Zone 2 and Zone 1 must receive minimum salaries of VND1.04 million, VND1.19 million and VND1.34 million respectively.

Employees hired by foreign individuals in Vietnam are also under the purview of the new decree.

Government representatives said the minimum wage could be modified again next year if the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs were to recommend it.

The decree also pushes the minimum monthly salary at local companies in Zone 4 up from VND650,000 to VND730,000.

The new minimum limits would be VND810,000, VND880,000 and VND980,000 at Zone 3, Zone 2 and Zone 1 respectively.

Earlier, the Government Office had announced a plan to increase the minimum monthly pay at state-owned companies in Zone 4 by 12.3 percent to VND730,000 ($41) starting next May.
